Proposal Table

Type of Magazine (fashion, music, etc)

Music magazine with fashion elements. Indie pop/Indie rock genre.
Name of Magazine

“Soul”
Audience (male/female)

Male and female but predominantly female. Aged between 16 and 25.
Audience (attitudes and interests)

The audience is mainly for people with a love for music and fashion mostly based around an indie pop/rock genre, festival lovers and people with a free spirited and lively attitude.
Outlet (where it can be bought from?)

Newsagents and supermarkets. These are both easily accessible and receive many customers on a daily basis. You can also buy the issue online by updating the app, you can download, each month. The target audience is teenagers and young adults therefore the internet and smart phones are an essential part of their everyday lives.
Necessary Information

The necessary information will be on the front of the magazine. This will include; barcode, issue number, date and price.
Selling Point

My main selling point is the interview of the new singer and it is one of the first interviews she has done therefore the target audience will want to find out everything about her before anyone else.
Theme (article)

The double page spread will be an interview between a new, upcoming singer songwriter and a reporter. There will be questions and answers relating to her personal life and her climb to fame as a singer and songwriter.
Images Front Cover

One main, mid shot image of a female singer with eye contact to the camera. I am only using this one image as this is the main selling point therefore I want it to be the main focus.
Images Inside

A few more shots of the female singer (model) and a shot of Ed Sheeran which I took at his gig.

Potential Problem Table

Potential area where there might be a problem
How I will deal with this problem
Front cover images

When reshaping the front cover image quality may become poorer and pixelated.

Lighting of the image may be in the wrong contrast or brightness therefore portraying the wrong message of the magazine. Or it could not attract the reader’s eye when the magazine is placed on the shelf.

I will make sure that I use a high quality image and that the size does not have to be increased by much in order to prevent pixilation.

On Photoshop I will make the lighting as realistic and perfect as possible to make the image attractive and eye catching to the reader.
Article Inside Magazine

Text may be too small for the reader to read comfortably.

Text may be too dominant compared with the image; this often is off putting to the reader.

I will set my font to an appropriate size, similar to the deconstructions I have been looking at.

I will have half my double page spread as an article and the other half as an image.
Images to accompany article

Images may be too large and take up too much room on the double page spread therefore not allowing enough space for text.

The lighting and contrast of the image may be too bright or too dark therefore making it a distraction when reading the article.

I will have half of the spread text and half of the spread image. This therefore will give an equal balance making the double page spread attractive.

I will probably have my main image in black and white to give a nice colour scheme to my article. The lighting and contrast will be in proportion to avoid any distractions.

Reader Profile

Photo shoot images I am not using for my magazine

I was taking photographs of Ed Sheeran at the City Hall on the 10th November. I have a couple of images that are successful and I will be using these on my contents page. On the other hand these images below were unsuccesssful due to a number of reasons...
This photo is blurry due to the camera being unsteady. There is also an obstruction at the bottom of the picture of a black shadow.

This photo's constrast affects the image because the colours are drained and its makes the objects in the photo unclear. I also have not zoomed in enough as some of the audience can be seen.

This is one of the photos I took at the planned photoshoot. The image is too bright and this looses details of her features. Even if I lower the contrast and the brightness it won't bring back the detail in her face.

The same effect has happened here.

The light is behind her and slightly to the side which has created a shadow on her face. This could have a nice effect but it is not suitable for a front cover image.

This image was taken on the camera without the flash. This is clearly too dark and obviously not suitable for my magazine.

From this task I learned that the best images are created when the light is infront of her face and the flash of the camera is on. If I was to do this again I would have used a tri pod the steady the camera even more.

The Simpsons Photoshop task

From this task I practised a lot of my skills on photoshop and it made me more confident when using the different tools. I learned how to use the layers effectively and how to arrange my layers behind or infront of each other. I also practised how to edit the images to make them better quality and stand out more clearly. I did this by adjusting the contrast, the brightness, the blending and the fill tool.

Preliminary Task

I created a front cover and a contents page for a student magazine for my preliminary task.
It took me a full media lesson, two hours, to complete this task. This includes taking the photographs and creating both pages on photoshop.
My teacher feedback that I got on this task was:-

I will improve by layering my page numbers and captions onto the particular image it is related to. I will do this on my final product contents page.

Fonts and colours for my magazine

I have chosen Retro style fonts for my magazine, this will reflect the contents of my magazine in terms of artists, fashion and genre of music.

A few weeks later I found more Retro style fonts to possibly use and consider for my magazine.
These are some fonts I considered for my pull quote on my double page spread. For this I wanted a hand writing style font, to contrast from the printed text and to show that these were the artist's words.

I chose these colours for my magazine because I felt they all compliment each other and they are summery colours. My magazine issue centrals around the upcoming summer festivals so this is very relevant. The colours are a mixture of unisex and female colours. This will suit my target audience well, male and female but predominately female.
